R.E.M. at Deer Lake

The spot to be on Friday was Deer Lake to take in REM kicking of their world tour. R.E.M.’s performance drew from almost all aspects of their musical journeys. It seemed appropriate to behold the breadth of songs from differing eras with a breadth of friends. The crowd was a healthy mix of way back fans, as well as ones who were no doubt drawn by R.E.M.’s latest album, Accelerate. This younger crowd were also likely attracted by Modest Mouse, and perhaps the National who got the evening rolling. However, the sound quality for the National was simply bad, and was only in the area of decent for Modest Mouse, before they finally got it right for R.E.M. While it was cool to see Modest Mouse use dual drummers, the overall cohesiveness seemed to be lacking, perhaps due to being an opener and less than stellar sound coordination.

Michael Stipe and the boys were in great form in terms of energy during their songs. S pointed out, correctly, that they could have strung together that energy to segue more. We’ll let them off the hook this time and chalk a few lengthy pauses up to it being their first stop on this tour. A little surprisingly I found my favourite song on the night to be Supernatural Superserious. I had expected the top highlight to come from an older favourite, but the energy, sound, and lyrics of this tune shone through on Friday night. The crowd seemed to leave happy after a near two hour set and some 25 songs. Not much more you can ask for. Thanks to E, M, S, M, E and S for their company at a good show.
