2008 Giro Underway
Posted by IR on May 15, 2008
The Giro got rolling this week featuring what could be the best field of any cycling race this year. A last minute decision saw Giro organizers invite Astana and defending Tour champion Alberto Contador along with high profile teammates Levi Leipheimer and Andreas Kloden. While the overall organization, cache and glory of the Giro is overshadowed by the Tour, this year’s developments have opened the door for some key performances to take place. I’m glad to see the race around Italy includes the team time trial, an event blatantly missing from the Tour these days. The opening days have also seen some veteran sprinters vie for the spotlight with some up and comers. It’s a shame there is no easily available TV coverage here in North America as we could be missing out on the biggest race of the year.
All the best to the riders and teams and a special cheer goes out to Levi who deserves a spot at the top of a Grand Tour. For live coverage and daily updates visit Velo News.
